Attacks kill 28 across country

-

KARACHI — A bomb blast that appeared to be targeting a provincial government minister killed 11 people before dawn Wednesday at a soccer field in southern Pakistan, the latest in a series of attacks that left 28 people dead across the country, officials said.

The bomb planted next to the field in Karachi was hidden in a motorcycle, said police. The bomb went off near the vehicle of provincial minister Javed Naghori, killing 11 people and wounding 24 others. Naghori was unhurt.

On Tuesday, police found the bodies of 13 people who were pulled off a convoy of buses in southwest Baluchistan province, shot dead and dumped in a ravine, officials said. A paramilitary soldier was also killed.

Elsewhere, Taliban gunmen killed three senior security officials in the same northern area where the militant group shot to death 10 foreign mountain climbers a month ago.

Experiment gone wrong: A Swedish inventor’s experiments with a new power source for electric cars caused a bomb scare that paralyzed parts of Copenhagen, Denmark, on Tuesday. Police said unusual wiring, copper pipes and suspicious objects found inside and outside Dan Zethraeus’ car led them to believe it contained an explosive device, and they evacuated buildings around the downtown underground parking garage where he had left it. The security measures were lifted when bomb experts confirmed the device was some kind of scientific experiment, police said.
