Memphis unplugged

- By Richard Locker

Crews worked at an MLGW substation near Getwell and I-240 Tuesday after a raccoon caused an outage that left 13,000 residents without power.

NASHVILLE — Former Tennessee Regulatory Authority director Sara Kyle of Memphis said Tuesday she’s considering running for governor next year after a Facebook page and a new website went up to encourage her to run.

“I am seriously considering helping the Democrats, whatever that entails. I sat down and met with them ... I’m not saying I will or I won’t, but I want to be available to do anything I can for the Democratic Party.

“You just never know what positive developments can come from sitting down and discussing issues with people,” Kyle said.

No other Democrat has emerged publicly to challenge Republican Gov. Bill Haslam’s bid for a second term in 2014.

With two years left on her term, Kyle resigned March 13 as a director of the state’s utility regulatory authority, where she served for 19 years. She was elected to its prede- cessor, the Tennessee Public Service Commission, in 1994 — the last woman to win a statewide Tennessee election. She is also a former Memphis City Court judge and the wife of state Sen. Jim Kyle, D-Memphis.

Sara Kyle, 60, said she has not seen a Facebook page, Run Sara Run, created Monday by Michael Lipe of Memphis, nor a website, draftsarakyle. com, created Tuesday by Steve Ross, who ran for the Shelby County Commission in 2012.

She said she knows she must decide soon whether to enter what would be an uphill battle against Haslam.
