25 years ago: 1988

It would take an estimated $172 million to air-condition all Memphis public schools, and students and their parents shouldn’t expect it any time soon. The best they can do in the heat of this summer as the children prepare to return to classes on Aug. 29 is: Pray for cool weather; play the game of air-conditioni­ng politics, which has shown results for some schools; or buy an air conditione­r for their child’s classroom, something the school board has allowed for only a few years. Air-conditioni­ng has been an issue for years with the Memphis school system. But by the system’s plan, it will be 15 years before the last classroom is cooled.

50 years ago: 1963

The long-standing controvers­y over fluoridati­on of Memphis’ water was left standing yesterday at about the same point it began 12 years ago. After the smoke of what was to have been a showdown vote cleared, Mayor Henry Loeb and Commission­er William Farris had voted for fluoridati­on, Commission­er John T. Dwyer and Claude Armour had voted against it, and Commission­er James W. Moore had not voted at all. City Atty. Frank Gianotti ruled that, without a majority, the measure failed to pass.

75 years ago: 1938

So pleased that he carried one box in the county, the one at Donaldson’s Store, Tom Collier, defeated candidate for county attorney general, is planning a watermelon party for his 26 supporters in the county and the 55 who voted for him in the Gaston Park district. This morning Collier will run five times around the Fairground­s race track with the watches being handled by Harry Northrup, “Doc” Hottum and Matt Allen.

100 years ago: 1913

A poke bonnet decorated with roses is the latest fad to be introduced for milady to wear while she lolls on the beach. The bonnet keeps her face from getting sunburned and the roses make the headgear more attractive.

125 years ago: 1888

Firemen answered a call last night to an alarm from 106 Adams. But when the ladies rushed in to douse the flames they found that all the smoke was coming from a pile of rags being burned by the residents to run swarms of mosquitoes out of the house.
