Metallica to play Harlem’s Apollo
There will be a different type of Sandman featured at the Apollo next month.
Metallica is set to rock the legendary Harlem venue on Sept. 21. They will promote their 3-D concert-action film, “Metallica Through the Never,” released in Imax on Sept. 27 and other theaters a week later. It will also air live on a special temporary Metallica channel on SiriusXM. The concert is just for SiriusXM subscribers, and it’s invitation only.
The Apollo, revered for its place in black entertainment and historic performances from the likes of James Brown and Michael Jackson, has become a venue for rock legends in recent years, including Bruce Springsteen and Paul McCartney — both shows for SiriusXM listeners.
And while the Apollo is known for its “Sandman” character who boots weak contestants during its famous amateur show, “Enter Sandman” is one of Metallica’s famous songs.
2 Chainz lands in hoosegow
Oklahoma City police say rapper 2 Chainz was among more than 10 people arrested after they failed to exit a tour bus following a traffic stop.
2 Chainz, whose real name is Tauheed Epps, was arrested Thursday morning on a charge of obstructing a police officer.
Sgt. Jennifer Wardlow says the tour bus was stopped around midnight near Interstate 40 because of an illegal taillight.
Wardlow says police noticed drug use when the bus was stopped and the driver was arrested. Other people on the bus refused to get off the vehicle.
Eleven people were arrested on the obstruction charge and booked into Oklahoma County Jail on Thursday afternoon.
2 Chainz performed Wednesday in Oklahoma City on Wednesday with Lil Wayne and T.I. His 2012 debut album topped the Billboard charts.
Miller protests gay oppression
Wentworth Miller is declining an invitation to be an honored guest at a film festival in Russia because he is gay.
The 41-year-old actor said in a letter Wednesday to organizers of the St. Petersburg International Film Festival that he is “deeply troubled” by the attitudes toward and treatment of gay people by the Russian government, which passed a law in June against representations of “nontraditional sexual relations.”
The star of TV’s “Prison Break” series says he’s declining the invitation because he’s gay and refuses to join a celebration in a country where he says gay people are “systematically denied their basic right to live and love openly.”
Miller is the latest celebrity to speak out against anti-gay legislation in Russia, which is hosting the Winter Olympics in Sochi.
