GOP changes its spots

- Richard Wilkinson, Amory, Miss.

During the glory days of the BushCheney administration, I heard conservatives say all the time, “My country, right or wrong.” They delighted in accusing anyone who complained of government abuses of power while we were at war of being traitors who wanted the terrorists to win.

How times have changed. I can’t remember the last time I heard any Republican say “my country, right or wrong.” In fact, conservatives proudly proclaim their patriotism as they now lead the protests against government abuses of power. We are still at war. By their own logic, doesn’t that make them the traitors who want the terrorists to win?

Why, of course not. They are always on the side of God and everything righteous and good. What garbage. They are now what they were then — self-righteous, bigoted, pompous, arrogant jerks who are only “patriots” if their party is in charge.

We never heard about states wanting to secede or “nullification” of federal laws by them when the saintly George W. Bush was president, did we? I remember hearing conservative preachers tell us Bush was chosen by God to lead us through the 9/11 crisis and the Iraq War. Using the same logic, doesn’t that mean God has anointed Barack Obama to lead us through these difficult economic times we face, thanks in large part to the wars Bush chose to finance on a credit card?

For eight years I heard the rage at all of us who protested the abuses of power by Bush and Cheney. Now these same people who mocked us are the ones getting stuck, and I am enjoying every second of their discomfiture.
