Lynx off to historic start
Lausanne captures 47-28 win in 1st game
It wasn’t a work of art by any means, but for the Lausanne football team, it was a masterpiece.
The Lynx, playing the first varsity game in school history, started fast Friday night then held on against the cramps and FayetteWare’s Raidarious Anderson to defeat the Wildcats, 47-28.
“This is something that I’ll always be able to tell my kids about, that I was part of the first varsity football victory at Lausanne,” said senior running back Michael Goodrich.
“It’s so exiting. This night is going to go down in history.”
The win was the 363rd for Ken Netherland, the all-time winningest coach in Tennessee high school history.
Star turns: Tanner Fuquay scored t hree touchdowns for the Lynx, who did a fine job executing Netherland’s run-first game plan. Fuquay scored on runs of 1, 36 and 1 yards.
Lynx quarterback Spencer Mackey had a sparkling 44-yard touchdown run on a keeper in the first quarter, completely wrong-footing a FayetteWare defender with a nice cutback move.
Turning point: FayetteWare, which has now lost 51 consecutive games dating back to 2007, didn’t make it to the field until about 15 minutes before kickoff and had a slew of early penalties and turnovers to help the Lynx take control.
Talking points: Lausanne suffered heavily from cramps in the second half which allowed the Wildcats to make a game of it. Said Goodrich, “We all pretty much have to go both ways, so there were a lot of guys that were cramping up out there.”
Extra points: Goodrich, who had two short scoring runs, could have had an even bigger game. He had an interception return to the Fayette-Ware goal line and a kickoff return for a touchdown both called back because of penalties. ... Anderson, a speedy wide receiver with great size, scored all 28 of FayetteWare’s points, catching touchdown passes of 78 and 30 yards, running for two more scores along with a pair of two-point conversions.
What’s next: The Lynx will get an extra week to celebrate their historic victory before traveling to face ECS — last year’s Division 2-A state runner-up — on Sept. 6. Fayette-Ware remains on the road next Friday, taking on Jackson Central-Merry.
