Strong stuff Former Ranger named PCL Strength Coach of the Year

JUPITER, Fla. — Memphis Redbirds strength and conditioni­ng coach and former Northwest Mississipp­i Community College Ranger Sean Johnson has been named the 2013 Pacific Coast League Strength Coach of the Year, the Profession­al Baseball Strength & Conditioni­ng Coaches Society recently announced.

Johnson recently completed his fifth season as a part of the Redbirds organizati­on, the Triple-AAA affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals. He began in Memphis as a strength and conditioni­ng intern in 2009 before moving into his current role as full-time coach.

Johnson played in the outfield for head coach Mark Carson and the Rangers during the 2006- 07 seasons. Northwest won 61 games in his two seasons, and in his sophomore year, finished fourth at the NJCAA World Series in Millington after going 40-17.

In 75 career games, including 55 starts, Johnson hit . 319 with 17 doubles, three triples and three home runs and also drove in 32 runs. He added 13 career stolen bases, 20 walks and 42 runs scored.

A member of the NSCA and a certified strength and conditioni­ng specialist (CSCS), the Senatobia native received his B. A. in kinesiolog­y in 2009 and master’s degree in exercise physiology in 2010 from Mississipp­i State University.
