Strong stuff Former Ranger named PCL Strength Coach of the Year
JUPITER, Fla. — Memphis Redbirds strength and conditioning coach and former Northwest Mississippi Community College Ranger Sean Johnson has been named the 2013 Pacific Coast League Strength Coach of the Year, the Professional Baseball Strength & Conditioning Coaches Society recently announced.
Johnson recently completed his fifth season as a part of the Redbirds organization, the Triple-AAA affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals. He began in Memphis as a strength and conditioning intern in 2009 before moving into his current role as full-time coach.
Johnson played in the outfield for head coach Mark Carson and the Rangers during the 2006- 07 seasons. Northwest won 61 games in his two seasons, and in his sophomore year, finished fourth at the NJCAA World Series in Millington after going 40-17.
In 75 career games, including 55 starts, Johnson hit . 319 with 17 doubles, three triples and three home runs and also drove in 32 runs. He added 13 career stolen bases, 20 walks and 42 runs scored.
A member of the NSCA and a certified strength and conditioning specialist (CSCS), the Senatobia native received his B. A. in kinesiology in 2009 and master’s degree in exercise physiology in 2010 from Mississippi State University.
