Vols top Tenn. St. for 3rd straight win

KNOXVILLE — Jordan McRae scored 25 points and Tennessee shot 55.4 percent from the f loor Friday to defeat Tennessee State 88-67 for its third consecutiv­e victory.

McRae has led the Volunteers (3-1) in scoring in each of their first four games.

Jarnell Stokes added 16 points and eight rebounds for Tennessee, which didn’t commit a single turnover in the first 16 minutes of the game. Robert Hubbs III added 10 points.

Patrick Miller scored 20 points, M.J. Rhett had 14 and Jay Harris added 12 for Tennessee State (0- 6).

Tennessee State, which went 18-15 last season, is 0- 6 for the first time since 1999-2000.

Ole Miss 111, MVSU 82 at Oxford, Miss.: Derrick Millinghau­s scored 21 points and Demarco Cox recorded career bests with 15 points and 12 rebounds to lead Ole Miss.

Ole Miss (3- 0) surpassed the 100-point mark for the first time since a win over Alcorn State in December 2010.

Millinghau­s made eight of 14 shots from the field. Marshall Henderson came off the bench to score 15 points, while Anthony Perez and Jarvis Summers each added 14 points.

Ole Miss steadily pulled away from the Delta Devils (1- 4) in the first half, building a 22-point halftime lead.

Providence 67, Vanderbilt 60 at St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands: Tyler Harris scored 15 points, including a key 3-pointer during a late 18- 0 run, as Providence won in the Paradise Jam.

Bryce Cotton added 14 for Providence (5- 0) and LaDontae Henton had 12.

Odom led Vanderbilt (22) with 17 points, Eric McClellan added 13 and Josh Henderson tied a careerhigh with 13 points.

Temple 83, Georgia 81 at Charleston, S.C.: Will Cummings 3 - pointer with 7 seconds left lifted Temple in the Charleston Classic.

Cummings f i nished with 17 points while Dalton Pepper had a career high 22 points off five 3-pointers for the Owls(2-3).

Temple will take on UAB in the fifth-place game Sunday. Georgia (13) will meet Nebraska to try avoiding an 0-3 tournament.

LSU 89, Southeast Louisiana 66 at Baton Rouge, La.: Johnny O’Bryant scored 18 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in LSU’s win.

O’Bryant, who registered the 20th doubledoub­le of his career, was 4-of-8 from the field and made 10 of 12 free throw attempts.

Four other players scored in double figures for the Tigers (3-1). Onochie Ochie was the top scorer for the Lions (22) with 17 points. Julian Chiera added 13 points.

(2) Kansas 88, Towson 58 at Lawrence, Kan.: Andrew Wiggins scored 16 points, Andrew White III added 13 and Kansas raced to a victory to open the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament.

Wayne Selden finished with 12 points and Perry Ellis had 10 for the Jayhawks (4-0).

Jerrelle Benimon had 21 points and 10 rebounds to lead Towson (3-2).

(10) VCU 73, Long Beach State 67 at San Juan, Puerto Rico: Rob Brandenber­g scored 19 points to help Virginia Commonweal­th rally, then fight off several late flurries and hang on in the Puerto Rico Tip-Off.

The Rams (4-1) trailed by eight early in the second half before reeling off a 13-0 run. Branford Jones led Long Beach State (1-5) with 19 points.

(14) Michigan 82, Florida State 80 at San Juan, Puerto Rico: Nik Stauskas scored 26 points, including seven in overtime, as Michigan erased a 16-point secondhalf deficit to win in the Puerto Rico Tip-Off.

The Wolverines (4-1) will play in Sunday’s game against Charlotte, which beat Northeaste­rn 86-77 in the other semifinal.

FSU (4-1) had a chance to win the game in the final seconds, but a midcourt heave by Aaron Thomas bounced off the backboard.

(18) Connecticu­t 59, Indiana 58 at New York: Shabazz Napier scored 27 points, including 11 over the final 7 minutes, to lead Connecticu­t (6- 0) over Indiana in the championsh­ip game of the 2K Sports Classic Benefiting Wounded Warrior Project.

Napier’s driving basket with 1:34 left to play turned out to be the final points of the game.

Indiana (5-1) turned the ball over twice and Yogi Ferrell missed a jumper in that span. Napier missed a 3-pointer and was called for an offensive foul in the hectic finish.

Massachuse­tts 81, (19) New Mexico 65 at Charleston, S.C.: Chaz Williams scored 19 points and Raphiael Puntey added 18 as Massachuse­tts advanced to the Charleston Classic championsh­ip.

The Minutemen used a late 14- 0 run to take control and improve to 5- 0.
