Fire Safety Day set on May 3

-

Focusing on serious subjects in a fun and informative way for the entire family, the Hernando Fire Department has slated its ninth annual Fire and Life Safety Day for 1 to 5 p.m. May 3 at Fire Station No. 2, 957 U.S. 51 N.

“It’s 100 percent free, including burgers and hot dogs and party bounces,” said Fire Inspector Matt Massey. Also on tap are safety-related demonstrations and instruction, he said.

Sparky the Fire Dog will be on hand, as will Hernando Police K-9 “Krash,” Mississippi MoToSteps Motorcycle Safety Training representatives and the Bicycle Safety Village. The Mississippi Department of Transportation will bring a seat belt safety simulator, and there will be helicopters on view from The Wing, Air Evac and the DeSoto County Sheriff ’s Department, said Massey.

An “arcs and sparks” electrical demonstration is scheduled by Entergy, as are live vehicle extrication and rescue tool programs by firefighters.

Event parking will be available at Magnolia Lighting at 325 Kapik off U. S. 51 just south of the fire station, with a shuttle running regularly.

Massey suggests households think of safety before the event: “Visit sparky.org, and complete your homesafety checklist, and come up with a plan” to deal with an emergency, he said.
