Gunman demands wallets of five men

- Lela Garlington

A masked gunman wearing a bandanna covering most of his face demanded the wallets of five men early Friday morning as the men arrived at Coast to Coast Imports LLC in Memphis.

The gunman fired four shots, but no one was seriously hurt.

One of the shots shattered a passenger-side window of a Hyundai Genesis parked outside the business. The broken glass caused minor injuries to the driver, Christopher Wells, who was treated at the scene.

The robbery happened at 6:27 a.m. at 1711 Latham. A caller told dispatchers a masked gunman “was shooting up the place.”

According to the police report, Jamie Mendes had just entered the accent furniture store, which is just off South Third, when the robber pulled a handgun on him and demanded his wallet.

As others arrived at the business, the robber ordered Robert Soto, Everendo Perez, Manuel RonzonPerez and Juan Dolonos to the ground and demanded money.

The robber took Mendes’ wallet, but three of the victims said nothing was taken from them. While the robber sought Soto’s wallet, the report did not say if Soto had one.

Witnesses said the robber ran from the business, going north on Latham and firing several shots.

Sgt. Karen Rudolph said the police found four spent 45- caliber shell casings and one unknown fragment at the scene. No arrests have been made.
