Peralta’s 2 homers boost Cards

ST. LOUIS — Jhonny Peralta went deep twice, ending the St. Louis Cardinals’ 366 at-bat homerless drought.

The first would have been plenty for Adam Wainwright.

Wainwright became the majors’ first five-game winner and Peralta had two home runs and four RBIs in a 7-0 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday.

“I’m really having more fun pitching right now than I ever have,” Wainwright said. “It’s just such a chess match.

“I feel I’m right where I want to be and so I’m going to work extra hard to stay there and not get complacent.”

Matt Holliday, Allen Craig and Yadier Molina also had RBIs for the Cardinals, who had five runs in their previous four games. St. Louis won two of three from the Pirates, shutting them out in both wins.

Wainwright (5-1) allowed three hits in eight scoreless innings and hasn’t allowed a run in 25 consecutiv­e innings.

He finished with seven strikeouts and two walks.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

Braves 1, Reds 0 (10 innings) at Atlanta: Freddie Freeman’s single to the center-field wall scored Jason Heyward from second with two outs in the 10th inning for the Braves.

Cincinnati’s Johnny Cueto and Atlanta’s Julio Teheran each allowed three hits in eight innings. Cueto struck out 11.

The Cardinals got their offense on track to help Adam Wainwright win his fifth game. struck out a season-high seven. Wily Peralta (3-1) had won three straight decisions.

Phillies 2, Diamondbac­ks 0 at Phoenix: A.J. Burnett (1-1) pitched eight sharp innings as Philadelph­ia ended a 10-game road trip with a victory over Arizona. Brandon McCarthy (0-5) struck out a careerhigh 12 in seven innings.

Mets 4, Marlins 0 at New York: Dillon Gee gave up three hits over eight innings, and Chris Young hit a two-run homer for the Mets. Gee (2-1) struck out six, walked four and threw 110 pitches.

Rockies 6, Dodgers 1 at Los Angeles: Josh Rutledge hit a three-run homer and Jorge De La Rosa (2-3) pitched seven strong innings to lead Colorado.

Padres 4, Nationals 2 at Washington: Cameron Maybin had two hits in his return to the San Diego lineup and Ian Kennedy (2-3) pitched seven strong innings. Maybin had been out since rupturing his left biceps in spring training.

AMERICAN LEAGUE

White Sox 9, Rays 2 at Chicago: Jose Abreu drove in four runs and set a major league rookie record for RBIs through the end of April in the White Sox’s win. Abreu has 31 RBIs. Albert Pujols had the previous mark of 27 in 2001.

Blue Jays 7, Red Sox 1 at Toronto: Melky Cabrera, one of a record six players from the Dominican Republic in Toronto’s starting lineup, hit a go-ahead double and the Blue Jays ended a season-worst fourgame losing streak.

The first four Toronto hitters were Dominican: Jose Reyes, Cabrera, Jose Bautista and Edwin Encarnacio­n. Juan Francisco batted sixth and Moises Sierra seventh. Esmil Rogers, the seventh Dominican for Toronto, struck out the side in the ninth.

Yankees 3, Angels 2 at New York: Mark Teixeira hit a tying homer and Jacoby Ellsbury scored the go-ahead run thanks to a passed ball and wild pitch in the eighth.

Mariners 6, Rangers 5 at Seattle: Kyle Seager hit a pair of home runs, including a three-run shot in the eighth, to lead the Mariners over Texas.

Seager has five home runs in four games.

Royals 9, Orioles 3 at Baltimore: Omar Infante homered and tied a career high with six RBIs as Kansas City coasted past the Orioles.

Astros 5, Athletics 1 at Houston: Collin McHugh allowed two hits over 8 innings as Houston beat Oakland. McHugh (20) struck out seven and walked three. .

INTERLEAGU­E

Giants 4, Indians 1 at San Francisco: Brandon Hicks hit a three-run homer with two outs in the ninth as the Giants finished a threegame sweep of Cleveland.
