Vols’ rally falls short against LSU

Tennessee rallied from a 4-2 deficit to tie the game in the top of the eighth, but No. 6 LSU answered with a five-run bottom half to clinch the series with a 9-4 win on Sunday afternoon at Alex Box Stadium in Baton Rouge, La.

The Tigers (33-11-1, 12-8-1) scored five runs (three unearned) on just two hits in the eighth. The Vols (26-16, 8-13) handed LSU three free passes in the inning — two walks and a hit by pitch — committed a fielding error and threw two wild pitches to spark the five-run rally.

COLLEGES

The Rhodes women’s golf team captured the Southern Athletic Associatio­n title, shooting a three day tournament total of 947 at Braselton, Ga. The Lynx edged out Centre College, who shot a 955. Nikki Isaacson led the Lynx, and finished tied for second overall with a three day total of 231 (76, 76, 79). Meg Healy was the second leading scorer for the Lynx with a 234 (81, 78, 75) to place her in a tie for fifth overall.

The Rhodes men’s golf team fought for a second place finish in the SAA at Braselton with a score of 879. Centre College captured the SAA title with an 871 Eric Muslawski was the Lynx’ top finisher, scoring a 218 (75, 69, 74) and placing fourth overall.

In the semifinal round of the Southern Athletic Associatio­n Conference tournament at Rome, Ga., the Rhodes baseball team defeated Berry College, 7-5, forcing a decision game. The Lynx improve to 31-13 while the Vikings are 29-14. Daniel Morris got the start for the Lynx, throwing 6¥ innings and striking out three

USF used a seven-run fourth for the second-straight day to run rule the University of Memphis softball team in five innings, 10-0, at the USF Softball Stadium. The Bulls earned the three-game series sweep and held the Tigers to three hits and a run for the weekend.

HOCKEY

Duncan Keith had a goal and three assists, and the host Chicago Blackhawks used a four-goal third period to finish off the St. Louis Blues with a 5-1 victory in Game 6 of their first-round playoff series. Chicago won four in a row after a slow start in St. Louis. The defending Stanley Cup champions will play the winner of the MinnesotaC­olorado series in the Western Conference semifinals.

Brad Richards and Dominic Moore scored secondperi­od goals, and Henrik Lundqvist made 24 saves as the host New York Rangers pushed the Philadelph­ia Flyers to the brink of eliminatio­n with a 4-2 victory. Defenseman Marc Staal gave the Rangers the lead in the first period and they extended it in the second in taking a 3-2 edge in the first-round series.

TENNIS

Maria Sharapova won her third straight Porsche Grand Prix title on Sunday by coming from behind to defeat Ana Ivanovic 3- 6, 6-4, 6-1 at Stuttgart, Germany. Sharapova won her first tournament of the year and clinched the 30th title of her career. She is now undefeated in 13 consecutiv­e matches on the indoor clay in Stuttgart.
