Smart, funny women are memorable. The documentary “All About Ann: Governor Richards of the Lone Star State” (8 p.m., HBO) takes an uncritical view of the feisty former governor of Texas. Richards championed progressive politics in a state better known for producing conservative stalwarts, including Tom DeLay, Ron Paul, Rick Perry and George W. Bush.

“Ann” celebrates Richards’ quotable humor as it follows her trajectory from Austin mother and housewife to a political professional who with- stood withering attacks on her gender and on her public admission of her past alcoholism.

More love letter than history lesson, “Ann” offers a glimpse at the evolution of Texas politics and provides an interesting chapter (or footnote) in the saga of the Bush family dynasty. Richards died of cancer in 2006.

Joe and Ryan become reluctant collaborators and guests at a gruesome dinner party on the second season finale of “The Following” (8 p.m., WHBQTV Channel 13).

Fans of ultraviolent thrillers should also note that “Bates Motel” (9 p.m., A&E) is down to its last two episodes of season two. Sheriff Romero (Nestor Carbonell) pulls out all the stops to determine if Norman is really as guilty as he seems.
