Real news was buried

Your front-page news on June 9 was about the FedEx St. Jude Classic. I love the tournament and I support St. Jude, but is this the most transcendental story there is? It is a golf tournament; how about putting it in the Sports section? Oh, wait, it was in the Sports section too. One could argue it is an event very relevant to the Memphis community, so why not put it in the Local section? In fact, you could even publish a special section, like you do weekly for real estate or entertainment.

The front page also had an article on city employees’ health insurance. Would that not be Local news?

And sharing the front page, news of another shooting spree, with five peo- ple dead in Las Vegas. On May 29, your Viewpoint commentary by Mona Charen concluded: “Pull the plug on the publicity machine for killers. It’s cost-free. It’s easy. It can be done immediately, and it might very well remove one of the chief lures of the killing spree.” I agree; this surely does not belong in front-page news.

Back on the June 9 Page 3A, there was a piece about a humble man who is using his powerful office as head of the Catholic Church to give Mideast peace one more try (“Pope dives into Mideast peace with prayer summit”).

It is a sad commentary on all of us if sports, killings and the ongoing dispute on health insurance are the most important news.
