MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — Participation at the annual Bible Reading Marathon in Murfreesboro is declining, but organizers say they are undeterred.

During the marathon at Bible Pathway Ministries — a Christian publishing house that produces Bible study aids — volunteers read the Bible nonstop, from cover to cover. It takes volunteers about 90 hours to read from Genesis to Revelation.

Last year, about 250 people volunteered to participate in the public reading. This year there were about 60

“It kind of shows where our world is right now,” said Jennifer Palafox, president of Bible Pathway Ministries. “But we’re still out here doing it. ... If we have to read every verse, we will.”

The marathon reading, in its 18th year, kicked off on Sunday evening after a community cookout and live music performances. As the night went on and Monday morning dawned, the Bible Pathway staff handled most of the reading

he unorthodox marathon draws attention to the company, but Palafox said it serves a spiritual function: Though she is the daughter of a Method- ist minister, Palafox had never read the entire Bible before joining the organization five years ago.

Despite decreasing turnout, Palafox said there was a positive response from visitors. Three years ago a Murfreesboro man decided to turn his life. around after attending the event. He returned to the reading this year.

“It’s worth it if we can help one person get saved,” Palafox said.
