Theft of clothing led to school lockdown

A suspect who allegedly pointed a gun at officers Wednesday, prompting a school lockdown, has been captured and charged.

Police said they got a call about 1:45 p.m. that a man was being robbed in the 1100 block of Catalina. The robbers took his clothes.

Arriving officers saw two males fitting the descriptio­ns of the suspects walking on Catalina carrying clothing in their arms.

The suspects saw the officers and began running in different directions.

Police chased one suspect into a backyard near Catalina and Vanuys, where the man pointed a gun at the officers, according to police reports. One of the officers fired four shots at the suspect.

The suspect continued to run, police said, but was captured after a short chase.

Christophe­r Travis, 24, was charged with aggravated robbery, aggravated assault and being a convicted felon in possession of a handgun. Records show that Travis pleaded guilty to robbery in Criminal Court in 2008 and was sentenced to seven years, two months and 12 days.

The second suspect in Wednesday’s robbery had not been apprehende­d.

The incident prompted a lockdown at Sherwood Middle School. next to his green Mercury Marquis. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

No arrests had been made.
