25 years ago: 1989

Sidney Shlenker unveiled plans to liven up Mud Island Thursday night with two — count ’em, two — pyramids: a crystal sphinx and a re- creation of an ancient Egyptian village. Shlenker also said he is considerin­g putting a Hard Rock Cafe in Mud Island’s former River Terrace restaurant, rather than in The Great American Pyramid. The former Denver businessma­n is managing Mud Island for the city and will run the pyramid for the city and county when it opens in mid-1991. He spoke to about 100 members of the Downtown Neighborho­od Associatio­n during a meeting at Waterford Plaza, were he lives.

50 years ago: 1964

NASHVILLE — The state has tentative plans to hire three female probation and parole officers to work with women who are conditiona­lly free in Tennessee after their conviction in the courts. One of the officers will be assigned to the Memphis office and the other two will work at Nashville and Knoxville. All adult probation-parole officers now employed by the state are men.

75 years ago: 1939

Memphis will become one of the football centers of the South next season, it was revealed by the Intercolle­giate Football Committee. Southweste­rn will play Tennessee, Ole Miss, Mississipp­i State and Clemson. Arkansas will renew relations with Mississipp­i at Crump Stadium and the Memphis Teachers, under Coach Sonny Humphreys, have scheduled a game with their old mentor, Allyn McKeen, now Mississipp­i State coach.

100 years ago: 1914

Last night Mr. and Mrs. R.B. Nebhut entertaine­d their debutante daughter, Zula, and Miss Elise Paxton, guest of Mrs. G.T. Fitzhugh, with a box party at the Orpheum followed by an after-theater dance and supper at the Chickasaw Guards Club.

125 years ago: 1889

Superinten­dent Collier yesterday reported there are 10 public schools in Memphis devoted to the education of white children and seven for Negro pupils with a total attendance last month of 4,394 youngsters, a gain of 553 over the previous month’s report.
