Hogs pull away from Alabama St.

Portis keys opening victory

FAYETTEVIL­LE, Ark. — Bobby Portis scored 24 points as Arkansas opened its fourth season under coach Mike Anderson by pulling away in the second half for a 9779 win over Alabama State.

Portis, a preseason firstteam All-SEC selection, finished 9 of 11 from the field for the Razorbacks (1-0). The 6-11 sophomore was 3 of 3 on 3-pointers.

Ten players scored for Arkansas, which shot 56.7 percent (34 of 60) for the game and rallied after trailing early in the second half. Junior guard Anthlon Bell (Bartlett) added 20 points, while Michael Qualls and Alandise Harris had 13 points each.

The Hornets (1-1), the preseason favorite in the Southweste­rn Athletic Conference, were led by DeMarcus Robinson’s 21 points.

(2) Arizona 86, Cal State Northridge 68 at Tucson, Ariz.: Freshman Stanley Johnson scored 17 points and Rondae Hollis-Jefferson had 14 to spark the Wildcats (2- 0). Brandon Ashley scored 13 for Arizona.

(3) Wisconsin 89, Chattanoog­a 45 at Madison, Wis.: Sam Dekker scored 18 points to lead four players in double figures for the Badgers (2-0). The Badgers hit 12 of their first 17 shots and led the Mocs (1-1) by 20 points less than halfway through the first half.

(6) North Carolina 103, Robert Morris 59 at Chapel Hill, N.C.: Brice Johnson scored 23 points and Kennedy Meeks had 21 for the Tar Heels (2-0). UNC scored the first 12 points, led by 18 at halftime then scored the first 11 after the break.

(9) Virginia 67, Norfolk State 39 at Charlottes­ville, Va.: Justin Anderson scored 11 points as the Cavaliers (2-0) pulled away early. The Cavaliers hit 8 of 11 from beyond the arc in the first half in taking a 42-22 lead. Jeff Short scored 19 points for the

Spartans (1-1).

(10) Texas 85, Alcorn State 53 at Austin, Texas: Isaiah Taylor scored 12 points and freshman Myles Turner had six blocks for the Longhorns (2- 0). Tamarcio Wilson had 16 points for the Braves (0-2).

(19) Oklahoma 78, Southeaste­rn Louisiana 53 at Norman, Okla.: Buddy Hield hit all seven of his 3-point shots and scored 25 points as the Sooners coasted in their opener. Hield’s first 3-pointer came during a 16-0 run to begin the game.

(21) Nebraska 80, Northern Kentucky 61 at Lincoln, Neb.: Terran Petteway scored 25 points, making six 3-pointers, to lead the Cornhusker­s in their opener. Freshman Tayler Persons led the Norse (0-2) with 13 points.

(23) Syracuse 65, Hampton 47 at Syracuse, N.Y.: Rakeem Christmas had 15 points and 16 and rebounds, freshman Chris McCullough added 13 points for the Orange (20) in the 2K Classic.

Holy Cross 58, (25) Harvard 57 at Boston: Justin Burrell scored 16 points, including a pair of free throws to give the Crusaders (1-0) the lead with two minutes left. Wesley Saunders scored 24 points for the Crimson (1-1), who were in the Top 25 for the first time.

SEC

(1) Kentucky 71, Buffalo

52 at Lexington, Ky.: Trey Lyles lifted Kentucky with five straight points to begin the second half, and Tyler Ulis scored 12 points on four 3-pointers.

Trailing 38-33 at halftime, Kentucky used a 3-pointer and subsequent steal and dunk by Lyles to get back on track. The 6-10 freshman forward finished with 12 points.

Missouri 56, Valparaiso 41 at Columbia, Mo.: Wes Clark scored 16 points and former Southwind star Johnathan Williams III added 10 to lead the Tigers (1-1). The Tigers used a 14-2 run to take a 41-29 lead with 9:47 remaining.

Vanderbilt 83, Trevecca

Nazarene 56 at Nashville: Damian Jones scored a career-high 24 points, while freshman Riley LaChance added 13 and Luke Kornet scored 10 to lead the Commodores in their opening win over the Trojans. Jones was 10 of 13 from the field and grabbed 12 rebounds.

AAC

South Florida 73, Jackson State 64 at Tampa, Fla.: Chris Perry scored a career-high 21 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Bulls (2- 0).

Central Florida 64, Stetson 55 at Orlando, Fla.: B.J. Taylor hit a jumper and four late free throws, and the Knights (1- 0) scored the last 11 points. Taylor led the Knights with 14 points and nine rebounds.

UNC Asheville 83, East Carolina 79 at Greenville, N.C.: Andrew Rowsey scored 28 points as the Bulldogs (1-1) topped the Pirates (1-1). Caleb White led ECU with 24 points.

SEC WOMEN

Ole Miss 91, Mississipp­i

Valley State 38 at Oxford, Miss.: Freshman Shandricka Sessom (Byhalia) led all scorers with 21 points to spark the Rebels (2- 0). Tina Faleru and Kelsey Briggs (Overton) scored 19 and 12 points, respective­ly.

Arkansas 75, Savannah State 46 at Fayettevil­le, Ark.: Sophomore Jessica Jackson scored a gamehigh 19 points to go along with 12 rebounds for her sixth career double-double, leading the Razorbacks (2-0).

MID-SOUTH MEN

Rhodes 67, Fontbonne

54 at Mallory-Hyde Gymnasium: Brennan Sullivan scored 13 points to lead the Lynx (1-1).

Drew Miller added 12 points for Rhodes. Luke Collins had 11 points, and Geoff Livsey, Ryan Van Hoeck (St. Benedict) and Dylan Bliss each had seven.

MID-SOUTH WOMEN

Rhodes 71, MacMurray

College 50 at Conway, Ark.: Symone Daniels (St. Benedict) led all scorers with 22 points and had nine rebounds for the Lynx (2-0). Bailey Kramer (Briarcrest) had nine rebounds and six points.

Briefly: Freshman Leron Black (White Station) scored a co-team-best 18 points to lead Illinois to a 114-56 win over Coppin State at Champaign, Ill. Ahmad Starks also had 18 for the Illini (2- 0). ...
