Wallace on track, off road in X Games
Rusty Wallace has long believed he retired from racing too soon, that he had another three years in a Hall of Fame NASCAR career.
Since his 2005 decision to get out of the car and transition into a broadcasting role with ESPN, Wallace has periodically longed to return to some form of competition.
He’ll get his chance in June at the X Games, where the 58-year-old Wallace will compete in the Off-Road Truck Racing event.
The X Games in Austin, Texas, held June 4-7, will be Wallace’s first time competing in Off-Road Truck Racing.
Three more race tracks have announced safety modifications that were determined necessary following Kyle Busch’s serious accident at Daytona.
Busch broke his right leg and left foot when he crashed into a concrete wall at Daytona in February. It has spurred industry-wide inspections to see if the walls at most tracks have enough protection to prevent an injury.
Texas Motor Speedway has added 250 feet of tire barriers in preparation for NASCAR’s visit next week.
Bristol Motor Speedway will add 600 feet of SAFER barrier to the front and backstretch outside walls before the race on April 19.
Michigan International Speedway will add the steel-and-foam energyreducing barriers to pit-in and pit-out walls, and tire packs will be installed at the angled wall inside Turn 1 before NASCAR’s visit in June.
Formula One for women: Motorsport’s governing body has given a lukewarm response to Bernie Ecclestone’s suggestion that Formula One teams should launch a championship for women.
Former rally driver Michele Mouton, president of the FIA’s commission for women in motorsport, said on Thursday, “From my own experience as a competitor, I truly believe women want to compete on an equal level with their male counterparts.”
