Hayek in Lebanon for ‘Prophet’
Salma Hayek is visiting her ancestral homeland Lebanon to launch “The Prophet,” an animated feature film she co-produced.
The film is a screen adaptation of the book by the same name written nearly a century ago by the famed Lebaneseborn poet and philosopher Khalil Gibran, who died in the United States in 1931.
Hayek traveled Sunday to Bcharre, a picturesque mountainous village in the country’s north, to visit Gibran’s museum, which has more than 400 of his paintings and portraits, handwritten notes and a copy of “The Prophet” that reportedly belonged to Elvis Presley.
The Mexican actress’ paternal grandfather was Lebanese and immigrated to Mexico.
Stars pay for scholarships
Anthony Anderson can recall when he worried about scrounging up money to pay for the rest of his college tuition, food and housing while attending Howard University.
Now the “Black-ish” star wants to help students avoid the same struggle. The actor-comedian and other celebrities, through their foundations, teamed up with the United Negro College Fund to donate scholarships to worthy students who are getting their college degrees.
“My parents couldn’t afford sending me to school, so I understand firsthand,” said Anderson, who went to Howard on a partial scholarship until his junior year in 1991.
More than $500,000 in scholarships were collectively given to 20 students by Anderson, Usher and Toni Braxton, Pharrell Williams, Kevin Hart, Big Sean and Los Angeles Clipper Chris Paul.
3 repeat food TV awards
Anthony Bourdain, Ina Garten and Martha Stewart remain the names to beat in food broadcasting.
For a second year running, the three dominated the top tier of television awards from the James Beard Foundation, winning for the same shows in the same categories as in 2014.
In fact, Bourdain made his a threeyear streak, taking home the honor for best on-location program for public television’s “The Mind of a Chef” every year since 2013.
Garten once again was named outstanding host for her Food Network series “Barefoot Contessa,” while Stewart took another win for in-studio program with public television’s “Martha Stewart’s Cooking School.”
