GREENWOOD, Miss. — The Museum of the Mississippi Delta is open again after a $450,000 renovation that took five months.
The museum’s executive director, Cheryl Taylor, told The Greenwood Commonwealth that she’s pleased with the freshly updated space.
“I didn’t have a vision of what it was exactly going to look like, but I had a vision that it needed to be improved,” she said.
A collection of mastodon bones, found in the Delta, is now more prominently displayed.
“As you know, it used to be hidden away in the back,” said Greenwood attorney Luke Schissel, a former board member of the museum.
“That’s probably caught most everybody’s attention.”
In 2010, the Mississippi Arts Commission gave a $125,000 grant to the museum, which used to be called Cottonlandia.
That was part of a capital campaign that grew to $450,000, including money from individual donors, local organizations, businesses and city and county and city governments.
The museum reopened during a reception Thursday.
Schissel said the updated facility is a clean, bright, open space.
As part of the redesign, exhibits can be moved around.
With kitchen facilities now on site, museum officials say the space could become an attractive place for social functions.
