Posturing at our cost

- James Klein, Cordova

As a Memphis taxpayer, I have a major problem with an obvious overreaction by Mayor A C Wharton in recommending that the General Forrest statue and remains of the general and his wife be relocated (June 26 article, “Wharton: Move Forrest statue, remains”). He is either unaware that removal of this statue would be in violation of our current state law, or he is taking a page out of President Obama’s text book and is choosing to ignore state laws.

Aside from this fact, my major concern is that I, like other city taxpayers, would wind up paying for it.

I would accept a tax increase to raise the salaries of underpaid city police officers and firefighters, or to help combat out-of-control crime in this city. However, I detest having any portion of my city taxes being spent to advance someone’s political agenda. A major portion of my federal taxes already go for that.
