The intense heat of recent days that reached the mid- to upper-90s probably led to the death of a Shelby County resident, the Health Department announced Friday.
No further information was provided about the county’s first heat-related fatality of 2015.
In a statement, department officials urged residents, especially the elderly, to spend as much time as possible in air-conditioned facilities, including shopping malls, libraries and movie theaters.
Fans do not provide sufficient cooling when temperatures are above 90 degrees, they said.
