It’s OK to say altering gender is bad choice
The current situation with Bruce Jenner is forcing society to re-examine its values.
Jenner is breaking down barriers and dismantling taboos that have preserved a sense of sexual orthodoxy for countless generations. Society, at large, has moved away from accepting the natural inclination for progeny and toward embracing the political, psychosocial and sexual realities of this modern age.
I offer this opinion as a critical response to what I view as both a moral and political issue. Christians have a mandate to love all people and to exact justice and mercy unequivocally. But in no way does this duty position us to accept or conform to a morally confused and politically bankrupt worldview.
Whatever happened to the days of biologically normal realities? Sexuality has become a complicated psychological, social and behavioral anomaly that is steeped in existentialism. Nothing, and I do mean nothing, is inscrutable and anything can be examined and discussed intelligently.
The reader may or may not agree with me, but I am offering a solid and reasonable opinion that I believe is contemporary and socially redeeming.
Homosexual and transgender aka LGBT issues are a developing reality born of sexual deviations as well as cultural manifestations to which we react on a daily basis. To disagree with Jenner’s actions is my right, and to speak out is my obligation.
I acknowledge and accept Jenner’s right to personal choice, but I also have the right to be resolute about my commitment to biblical principles, common sense and personal understanding.
The issue is debatable, and the opportunity for exploitation is incredible. Scientifically, Jenner does not have a leg to stand on. The human genome yields no evidence of any genetic specialization or variation to support anything but the biologically conceived male and female.
Jenner reports that his/her family members support the sex-change decision. What else can they do and what choice do they have? Familial relationships, inheri-
tance rights and other potential constraints most likely engender their acceptance.
Such amazing pressure that must be. With the rare exception of hermaphrodites, biology and physiology dictate the creation and separation of male and female as it relates to procreation and genitalia. In his former life as Bruce, now Caitlyn, the ability to produce children confirmed his biological makeup as male. Through the process of acculturation, males and females develop gender roles that permeate our culture. Therefore, masculinity cannot be so easily put aside.
Human nature and physicality are integral to shaping the male experience. Equally important is the need to understand that sexuality is emotional as it relates to personal identity. So the question remains, where does Jenner go from here? Can he truly be female, given that he has sired children and in reality, women don’t produce sperm?
I have witnessed the vehement and overthe-top reaction to people who don’t embrace Caitlyn Jenner’s philosophy. I would hope that those of us who are Christians can emerge from this discussion more libertarian and yet affirm our biblical faith. Our preaching and teaching are built upon faith and should never be confused as an endless and tedious rehash of spiritual naïveté.
Politics and the law have deceived and reordered public opinion. The opposing view is secular, dogmatic and politically correct to a fault. The willingness of society to embrace Jenner’s position is the retelling of the fairy tale “The Emperor’s New Clothes.” Society has been deceived because in actuality, “the Emperor” is exposed and has no clothes.
We have to understand with whom we are in debate. There is legitimate discussion to be made, and it must be done properly. This is a cross we must carry. To disagree does not make me a hater. The truth sometimes hurts, but it does make me free.
Finally, may the debate on transgender sexuality be vigorous and perpetual. Our human origin out of the will of God points us in a new public struggle to make a consistent argument for religious principles. There is a larger cosmic reality that suggests that the faithful will pit faith against a society quickly turning radical about transgender issues.
Being persuasive and credible is significant, but being cogent above visceral in this argument will help our faithful interpretation to be received and will in turn, save humanity from certain destruction.
