Padres score late to give Cards 4th straight defeat

ST. LOUIS — Jedd Gyorko homered in the seventh inning to tie the score and then had a run-scoring single in the ninth to lead the San Diego Padres to a 2-1 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday night.

San Diego won the first two games of the fourgame series after losing three straight.

St. Louis lost a seasonhigh fourth straight home game, but the Cardinals are still a major leaguebest 29-11 at home.

Gyorko hit a 3-2 pitch from closer Trevor Rosenthal (1-1) to bring in Yangervis Solarte, who hit a one-out triple.

Joaquin Benoit (5-3) got the win in relief and Craig Kimbrel got his 21st save in 22 opportunit­ies. He got Jason Heyward to ground into a game-ending double play.

St. Louis starter Michael Wacha, in his first career appearance against the Padres, gave up one run and five hits in seven innings. He struck out six and walked one.

The Cardinals scored in the fifth inning on a double-play groundout by Xavier Scruggs. Heyward and Yadier Molina singled to start the rally. Randal Grichuk coaxed a ninepitch walk after falling behind 0-2 to load the bases.

Tommy Pham was called up from the Redbirds and started in center field. He went 0-for-3. The Cardinals sent left-hander Tim Cooney to the Redbirds. St. Louis also put outfielder Jon Jay on the 15-day disabled list retroactiv­e to July 1 with a stress reaction in his left wrist.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

Braves 2, Phillies 1 at Atlanta: Juan Uribe hit a tiebreakin­g homer in the seventh to lift the Braves.

Uribe pulled Adam Morgan’s first pitch in the seventh over the 380-foot sign in left field.

Julio Teheran (6-4) allowed one unearned run and seven hits in seven innings.

Marlins 2, Cubs 1 at Chicago: Justin Bour and Christian Yelich homered and Miami got six impressive innings from Tom Koehler. Bour’s solo home run in the sixth off Cubs starter Jason Hammel (5-4) snapped a 1-1 tie. That was the difference for Koehler (7-4), who allowed five hits and an earned run in six innings, striking out four and walking one.

Nationals 2, Giants 1 at Washington: Clint Robinson, a 30-year-old nonroster invitee by Washington in spring training who had just 13 major league at-bats before this season, hit a two-run homer in the seventh to give the Nationals a victory over San Francisco.His homer off right-hander Jake Peavy (0-3) made a winner of lefthander Gio Gonzalez (6-4) who allowed a run and five hits in seven innings.

Brewers 12, Reds 1 at Cincinnati: Carlos Gomez hit his first career grand slam and tied his career high with five RBIs, leading Milwaukee. Gerardo Parra and Aramis Ramirez hit solo homers for the Brewers. Gomez, Jonathan Lucroy and Ryan Braun had three hits each as Milwaukee won its sixth straight.

AMERICAN LEAGUE

Tigers 8, Blue Jays 6 at Detroit: Anibal Sanchez’s no-hit bid was broken up when former Detroit teammate Ezequiel Carrera lined a single to left with one out in the eighth, and the Tigers held on to beat Toronto.

Sanchez (7-7) wound up allowing four runs, three hits and three walks in 7 ⅓ innings.

The Tigers lost slugger Miguel Cabrera to a calf injury in the fourth inning. Detroit manager Brad Ausmus expects the two-time AL MVP to go on the disabled list.

Royals 3, Twins 2 (10) at Kansas City, Mo.: Lorenzo Cain had three hits and scored the winning run in the 10th as the Royals snapped a four-game losing streak. Cain led off the bottom of the 10th with a double, went to third on a wild pitch by Aaron Thompson (1-3) and scored on Jarrod Dyson’s fielder’s choice grounder to first baseman Joe Mauer.

Astros 12, Red Sox 8 (10) at Boston: First baseman Mike Napoli allowed Preston Tucker’s hard grounder to bounce past him for an error, and Carlos Correa followed with a tiebreakin­g single in a four-run 10th that lifted Houston to its fifth straight win. Jose Altuve had three hits and two RBIs for the AL West-leading Astros.

Angels 8, Rangers 2 at Arlington, Texas: Kole Calhoun drove in four runs with a pair of early doubles, and Los Angeles won in its first game against Texas since trading Josh Hamilton back to the Rangers. Hamilton went 1 for 3 with a double and two strikeouts.

Yankees 7, Rays 5 (12) at New York: Brain McCann hit a three-run homer in the 12th to win it for the Yankees. Mark Teixeira hit a tying three-run homer in the eighth against Kevin Jepsen, then singled in the 12th.

White Sox 1, Orioles 0 at Chicago: John Danks pitched seven scoreless innings and Jose Abreu hit a home run, leading the White Sox. Danks (4-8) allowed five hits with five strikeouts and two walks.

Mariners 9, Athletics 5 at Oakland, Calif.: Nelson Cruz, Seth Smith, Brad Miller and Logan Morrison all hit two-run homers and Seattle earned its third win in four games. Mark Canha had two hits and three RBIs for the Athletics.
