Lawyers to help with guardianship
TUPELO, Miss. — The Mississippi Volunteer Lawyers Project will help low-income adults who want to establish legal guardianship of children enroll them in school for the coming year.
The guardianship clinic is scheduled for July 15 at the Lee County Justice Center in Tupelo.
Those who are interested in attending must meet federal requirements.
Schools require documentation of legal guardianship before enrolling a child who is living with someone other than a parent.
This means grandparents and other relatives must file guardianship documents with the chancery court before attempting to enroll the children they are raising with the school district.
Lawyers Project Executive Director Gayla Carpenter-Sanders says a lawyer will work to help guardians get their children enrolled in school without delay for the coming school year that begins in August.
Students from the University of Mississippi Law School’s Pro Bono Initiative will be on hand to draft the documents that are necessary for the court.
