Cordova’s first hours as a Memphis neighborhood Wednesday were quiet ones, but police put their all into the few calls they received.

Memphis police officers began patrolling the newly annexed area at 12:01 a.m. Wednesday, but the first call — a burglar alarm — didn’t come until 4:25 a.m., said Captain Chuck Ewerling. By late Wednesday, police had responded to five calls in Cordova, none of them serious.

The attention from the police department was not enough, however, to soothe the anger of some Cordova residents, who learned Tuesday they had lost their last battle to avoid annexation by Memphis.

“It’s ironic that this is supposedly Independence Day, and we’ve lost our independence,” Cordova resident Jack Kreamer said Wednesday. He said he considered hanging a City of Memphis flag upside down next to his American flag.
