Chile beats Argentina to win Copa America

-

Goalkeeper Claudio Bravo made a save and striker Alexis Sanchez made the winning penalty kick as host Chile defeated Argentina 4-1 in a shootout at Santiago after a 0-0 draw in the Copa America final on Saturday, winning its first major title.

Bravo stopped Ever Banega’s low shot by diving to his left to make the save, and earlier Gonzalo Higuain also missed for Argentina, sending his shot over the crossbar. The Chileans made all of their penalty shots. Nearly 50,000 Chileans packed the Estadio Nacional. “This is a dream; this team deserved a victory like this,” said midfielder Arturo Vidal. “The Chilean people needed this triumph, needed something so beautiful as being crowned Americas champion.”

The loss extends Argentina’s and star Lionel Messi’s title drought. The national team hasn’t won a trophy in 22 years.
