Takeover by court

- Oge Swensen, Millington

The June 26 Supreme Court ruling on homosexual marriage sickens me to my very core. Not only is the decision despicable, but it shows the extent to which the Supreme Court has taken over our country. Just a day before, Chief Justice Roberts said, in effect, after ruling on the Affordable Care Act, that it really doesn’t matter what the law says, it is what was in the mind and hearts of those that signed it at the time that matters. Can the justices really know that?

On June 26, Justice Kennedy said that, in effect, the Constitution provides liberty to all with certain specific rights. Is there a specific right to homosexual marriage included anywhere in our treasured document? No. So then, we must go back to the heart and minds of the framers. Do you think they meant for it to be there? I doubt if they thought it possible. The Supreme Court has destroyed the term “marriage.” If the Supreme Court would promise me that they wouldn’t let the homosexual community follow, my wife and I could change the term for what we have to “joined” or “linked” or maybe even “matrimonied,” just anything that had real meaning.

Without a coup or an election, the Supreme Court has taken over our country. It no longer matters what the people or the legislatures want or decide. State constitutions are meaningless. You may love today’s decision, but wait until tomorrow. Remember, the Supreme Court knows what’s best for you, and they are no longer interpreters of the law. They are the law, and like kings and queens, they are there until they die or abdicate.
