‘Chasing Life’ even more complicated in Season 2

- By Kevin McDonough

Like many soap operas and series adapted from telenovelas, t he dra ma “Chasing Life” (8 p.m., ABC Family, TV-14) really knows how to pile on the complications. It’s not enough that April (Italia Ricci) is facing an aggressive form of cancer. She’s barely reconciled to that when she learns that the details of her birth are a tad hazy. Add endless profession a l complications (like losing her job) and a sudden engagement, and you’ve got a character with a malignancy forced to multitask.

In the second season premiere, April vows to go with the flow and rea lly enjoy her engagement party. What could go wrong?

Origina lly scheduled to return in August at 9 p.m., “Life” was moved up to replace the struggling documentary series “Becoming Us,” which has been bumped to 9 p.m.

Best known for snacking on off-putting cuisine like bugs, Andrew Zimmern shifts gears to host “Bizarre Foods: Delicious Desti nat ion s” (8 p. m., Travel), a celebration of glorious food long associated with a particular city or location.

Zimmern’s first trip is to San Francisco, home to Dungeness Crab Louie a nd sou rdoug h bread . Later, he’s in Jamaica (8:30 p.m.), where he explains the origins of that nation’s signature tastes, including jerk chicken and mannish water (goat soup), Blue Mountain coffee, curry goat and gizzards. It wouldn’t be an Andrew Zimmern show without some gizzards!

Brenda Blethyn (“Little Voice”) stars as a cranky dete c t ive who solve s crimes of a rather grisly nature in Northeast England in the popular detective series “Vera,” which has also spun off movielength installments. Season five is available starting today on the Acorn streaming service, where the first four can also be seen.
