Lambert to start as Georgia QB

Virginia transfer earns job

-

ATHENS, Ga. — Transfer Greyson Lambert has been picked as the starting quarterback for No. 9 Georgia.

Coach Mark Richt made the announcement after Monday’s practice.

Lambert began his college career at Virginia before transferring to Georgia. The junior had battled throughout preseason practice with last year’s backup, sophomore Brice Ramsey, and junior Faton Bauta.

Richt said Lambert was told before practice that he’ll start Saturday’s opener against Louisiana-Monroe.

“There may be others that get in the game, but he’s the starter,” Richt said. “It’s been a very, very close competition and it’s still being contested. But at this point, we felt it was wise to name the starter and get him the reps with the No. 1 unit.”

Richt says all three will continue to battle for the job, and there’s no guarantee that Lambert will be the starter all season. But the coach said he felt it was important to choose a clear-cut starter heading into the first game.

DEVELOPMENTS

Ex-Melrose star hurt: Missouri coach Gary Pinkel says freshman wide receiver Johnathan Johnson, who played at Melrose, will miss the season with an ankle injury that required surgery.

Johnson was hurt during a scrimmage Saturday.

“He was playing the best,” Pinkel told KansasCity.com. “We have a good, young receiving corps, but that was a hit. He was really doing well. But that’s the way it is — (sophomore wide receiver) J’Mon (Moore) hurt his (left) shoulder today. Sometimes, that happens.”

Also, safety Cortland Browning and wide receiver Wesley Leftwich have knee injuries and will miss the opener. Pinkel said he expects both players to return soon, probably in a week or two.

The 24th-ranked Tigers, coming off consecutive SEC East titles, play host to Southeast Missouri State on Saturday.

LSU picks QB: LSU coach Les Miles says sophomore Brandon Harris will start at quarterback for the 14thranked Tigers in their season opener at home against McNeese State on Saturday.

Miles said he is keeping the quarterback competition open through the end of the week, though, and won’t rule out playing Anthony Jennings.

“It is a foregone conclusion that Brandon Harris will start against McNeese,” Miles said. “He absolutely will take the first snap. I feel like both quarterbacks can play and both can improve.”

Jennings, a junior, started all but one game a season ago.

Miles attended practice after missing his regularly scheduled lunchtime meeting with media because he was feeling ill and checked himself in to a hospital.

The coach says he suspects he drank too much coffee earlier Monday after not having any for about six months.

“I went for some examination and testing. Everything’s fine. I am ready to roll,” Miles said. “The only thing I did miss was my weekly press conference.”

Golson is FSU choice: Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher ended the suspense on Monday by announcing Everett Golson had earned the job of starting quarterback for the Seminoles.

Golson, a graduate transfer from Notre Dame, beat out junior Sean Maguire.

“He came in, related to our players well and showed what kind of player he was,” Fisher said of Golson. “He has a good grasp of things. Making reads, plays and getting on the edge with his legs when he has to.”

Golson started 23 games for the Fighting Irish in 2012 and ’14.
