Cardinals’ Martinez scratched from start

- From Our Press Services

ST. LOUIS — St. Louis Cardinals right-hander Carlos Martinez has been scratched from his scheduled start today because of a sore back.

Martinez (13-6, 2.91) was hurt in his last start Thursday in Arizona.

Left-hander Marco Gonzales was called up from the Triple-A Redbirds to make the start against Washington. Gonzales is 1-4 with a 5.20 ERA in 13 starts for Memphis.

Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said Martinez is expected to miss just one start, adding, “We’ve had our eyes open looking for a time to get him some rest.”

Matheny told MLB. com that the Cardinals could give others, such as Michael Wacha, a similar break this month.

“We’ve got multiple guys that we’re keeping our eyes on,” Matheny said. “And if there is an opportunity and we need to, we’re not afraid to take advantage of extra rest.”

DEVELOPMENTS

Cubs get outfielder: The Chicago Cubs acquired outfielder Austin Jackson from the Seattle Mariners on Monday, boosting their depth for their run at a possible playoff spot.

Chicago sent a player to be named and money for an international draft slot to the Mariners.

Because the deal was made before Sept. 1, Jackson will be eligible for the postseason.

“Austin Jackson — I’ve seen him for a long time in the American League. He’s a really good player,” said manager Joe Maddon, who is in his first year with the Cubs after a long run with Tampa Bay.

“When he starts swinging the bat well, he’s very productive, fine outfielder, good base runner, stolen bases.”

The 28-year-old Jackson was traded from Detroit to the Mariners in July 2014. He was hitting .272 with eight homers and 38 RBIs in 107 games this season.

Royals, Braves deal: The AL Central-leading Kansas City Royals have reached a deal to get outfielder Jonny Gomes from the Atlanta Braves. Terms of the deal weren’t disclosed.

The 34-year-old Gomes has been in the postseason four times since 2010 and helped Boston win the World Series two years ago. The Red Sox traded Gomes and ace Jon Lester to Oakland last year for outfielder Yoenis Cespedes and a draft pick.

Gomes hit .221 with seven homers and 22 RBIs in 195 at-bats with Atlanta. He was playing left field for the Braves and has been a designated hitter during his career.

Briefly: After placing outfielder Brennan Boesch on the disabled list because of an ankle contusion late Sunday, the Cincinnati Reds promoted outfielder/infielder Adam Duvall from TripleA Louisville on Monday. The Reds also called up right-hander Michael Lorenzen from Louisville and optioned David Holmberg there. ... The Yankees have sent first baseman Mark Teixeira back to New York for tests on his bruised right shin. The Yankees opened a series against the Red Sox on Monday in Boston.
