SUPER DISTRICT RACES

-

In addition to the seven single-member City Council districts, Memphis voters will select six Super District council members in the Oct. 8 municipal election. Each of the two super districts, both of which cover half the city, has three seats.

Four of the six seats feature incumbents running for their final term before term limits take effect. Only Super District 9, Position 2 and Super District 8, Position 3 have open spots.

In Super District 8-3, FedEx sales manager Mickell Lowery and financial adviser Martavius Jones are expected to be the two most viable candidates. Lowery, a member of the state Democratic Party’s executive committee, is running for the seat currently occupied by his retiring father, Myron Lowery. Jones is a former Memphis City Schools board member known for advocating for MCS charter surrender. He narrowly missed the Democratic nomination for District 10 on the County Commission last year. Jacqueline Camper also is running in Super District 8-3.

Incumbent Joe Brown, a member of the City Council since 1998, is challenged by George Thompson and Victoria Young in Super District 8-1. Incumbent Janis Fullilove is challenged by J. Eason and Isaac Wright in Super District 8-2.

Incumbent Kemp Conrad is challenged by Charley Burch and Robin Spielberger in Super District 9-1. Incumbent Reid Hedgepeth is challenged by Zachary Ferguson and Stephen Christian in Super District 9-3.
