Memphis women’s team ties Dartmouth

-

The University of Memphis women’s soccer team shook off a poor first half for a 1-1 draw against Dartmouth on Sunday at Vanderbilt’s Soccer/Lacrosse Complex in Nashville.

The Tigers (2-1-1) played a strong second half and two overtime periods but couldn’t forge ahead.

“The first half was the worst soccer we’ve played since I’ve been the coach here,” Memphis head coach Brooks Monaghan said. “We were extremely lethargic and it was disappointing. ... At halftime, tactics were not talked about. It was all about effort and playing with your heart on your sleeve. In the second half, it was like two completely different teams.”

In the first half, Dartmouth outshot Memphis 9-5. In the second half, the Tigers dominated and took 13 shots to two for the Green.

The Tigers trailed 1-0 approaching the final 10 minutes before freshman Elizabeth Woerner scored from the top of the box.

“It was a great goal. We’ve switched Lizzie into an attacking midfield role and she gives us another scoring threat in the midfield. It was obviously a very important goal,” Monaghan said.

The Tigers next return to Mike Rose Soccer Complex after two weeks on the road. Memphis will host UT Martin at 7:30 p.m. Friday, then host Idaho at 1 p.m. Sunday.

SOCCER

Defender John Brooks and defender DeAndre Yedlin will be with the U.S. national team for next month’s playoff against Mexico for a berth in the 2017 Confederations Cup rather than with the under-23 team at Olympic qualifying. U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann said Monday he was not sure whether Stanford forward Jordan Morris would be with the national team or the under-23s. The Americans play Oct. 10 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California. The winner will represent North and Central America and the Caribbean in the Confederations Cup. CONCACAF’s Olympic qualifying semifinals are the same night at Sandy, Utah.

AUTO RACING

Jack Beckman got his sixth Funny Car win of the season at the U.S. Nationals on Monday at Brownsburg, Indiana, edging three-time Indianapolis winner Robert Hight. The victory was the 21st of Beckman’s career but his first at Lucas Oil Raceway. Morgan Lucas (Top Fuel), Erica Enders (Pro Stock) and Jerry Savoie (Pro Stock Motorcycle) also won at the final NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series event of the regular season.
