Man points gun at group, off-duty officers
Convicted felon arrested after crash
A disoriented man wrecked a car in a Bartlett neighborhood early on Aug. 29, then pointed a gun at people who came to see if he needed assistance — two of them off-duty Bartlett police officers.
The gunman reportedly pointed the weapon at several people nearby and even chased one of the off-duty officers around a car, according to police reports, before fleeing from the scene. He was arrested 35 minutes later on Morning Vista Drive in Memphis after he struck a fire hydrant. Further investigation revealed the driver also struck at least three other vehicles, a fence and a mailbox.
The driver faces charges of leaving the scene of an accident, felon in possession of a handgun and six counts of aggravated assault. He was ordered held for the action of the Shelby County grand jury after a Monday appearance in Bartlett Municipal Court.
According to reports, the driver of a black 2001 Toyota Corolla struck a tree at a residence on West Monica before 1 a.m. Aug. 29. A group of people were at a nearby residence and several went to check on the driver, who appeared disoriented.
That’s when he pointed the gun at people and chased the off-duty officer.
Based on the car and the tag number, authorities were able to link the vehicle to a convicted felon, police said. The car left north on Elmore Road.
At 1:15 a.m., Bartlett police received a call from Memphis saying a car matching the description crashed on Morning Vista, leading to authorities taking Kaleub Jones, 34, into custody.
