KNOXVILLE — The University of Tennessee’s new five-year improvements plan ran up against the reality of election-year politics Friday. On Thursday, UT officials said they would present to the Board of Trustees a detailed plan to upgrade the system’s five campuses. But Friday, UT president Lamar Alexander presented only a broad outline of the plan. He omitted cost estimates, saying the UT board would take up costs Nov. 27 — three weeks after the Nov. 6 general election.
50 years ago: 1965
E.L. Bruce Co., Inc., Memphisbased hardwood manufacturing firm, yesterday revealed plans for a new Memphis industry, election of a new board chairman and a 12 per cent increase in first quarter sales. The company has signed an agreement with Georgia-Pacific Corp. of Crossett, Ark., manufacturers of Royal Oak charcoal briquets, to manufacture the briquets in a new 2.5-million-dollar plant to be built on Bruce property at 1648 Thomas. When completed next fall, the plant will employ about 75 persons and produce 30,000 tons of hardwood charcoal briquets annually.

The Memphis Chapter of War Mothers is beginning its new season under the leadership of Mrs. Dora Kemker who has succeeded Mrs. F.H. Eaton as president. Mrs. Eaton is the new state president.

A trial by jury will be asked by Mayor Crump and other officials in the ouster suit filed against them by the State of Tennessee through Attorney General Thompson on the grounds that illegal liquor sales were condoned in Memphis. T.K. Riddick and James L. McRee represent the defendants.

OXFORD, Miss. — Cotton merchants in Oxford have all contributed to a fund to build a camp house for the accommodation of farmers hauling their cotton here from some distance.
