Police investigate video of beating

- Jody Callahan

Memphis police are investigating after viewing a cellphone video that reportedly shows officers hitting a suspect with batons several times.

The incident happened Friday afternoon in the Hickory Hill area. According to police, Jose Deillado was trying to break into an apartment in the 5900 block of Hickory Hill Square. The man who lives there told police that Deillado entered his home and the man ultimately stabbed the intruder.

Deillado fled, but was soon found by police. Police said Deillado began fighting with them and trying to bite officers, so they used force to subdue him.

No one was seriously injured in the incident, but police are investigating the use of force.

“We are aware of the video and our Inspectional Services Bureau had opened an administration investigation. The officers have not been relieved of duty at this point. This is an ongoing investigation,” a police spokesman said in a statement.

Deillado was charged with aggravated assault, aggravated burglary, evading arrest and resisting arrest. He is being held on $30,000 bond.

Deillado appears bruised and beaten in his mug shot, but according to the affidavit, the family who lived in the home he allegedly entered said he showed up there with those injuries.
