Tennessee self-reports 18 NCAA violations

-

Tennessee self-reported 18 NCAA violations from May 2015 through January 2016, all of them Level III violations, according to a report provided to the Knoxville News Sentinel in response to a public records request.

Level I violations are considered “severe” breaches of conduct, and Level II violations are “significant” breaches of conduct. Level III violations are breaches of conduct that, according to the NCAA, are “isolated or limited in nature; provide no more than a minimal recruiting, competitive or other advantage; and do not include more than aminimal impermissible benefit.”

Tennessee self-imposed penalties for each of the violations. All of those penalties were approved by the NCAA.

The football teamwas involved in four of the violations, three of which involved recruiting. One of the violations resulted in secondary coach Willie Martinez’ s one-game suspension, which kept him out of Tennessee’ s season-opening 59-30win over Bowling Green.

The men’s basketball team self-reported a violation when a player mentioned a recruit by name on Twitter and welcomed him to campus. That player was “provided rules education” on social media and recruiting.

The women’s basketball team self-reported three violations, and the swimming program also reported three violations. The women’s golf and women’s rowing programs each reported two. The women’s soccer and tennis programs reported one each. Most of the violations were recruiting-related.
