Cards top Braves on two 3-shot HRs

ATLANTA — Adam Wainwright was frustrated by his second straight unimpressi­ve start.

No need to worry. The Cardinals’ bats picked up the ace right-hander to cap a high-scoring weekend.

Brandon Moss and Matt Carpenter hit three-run homers and St. Louis beat the Braves 12-7 on Sunday to keep Atlanta as the only NL team without a win.

The Cardinals scored a combined 31 runs in the three-game sweep after being held to seven runs in three losses at Pittsburgh to open the season.

After rallying for a 7-6 lead in the eighth, the Cardinals put the game away with five runs in the ninth. Aledmys Diaz hit a two-run double off Jose Ramirez before Carpenter’s three-run homer.

The Braves (0-5) lost right-hander Dan Winkler, who suffered a fractured right elbow while throwing a pitch in the seventh. He left the mound in obvious pain after throwing behind Randal Grichuk.

Wainwright allowed five runs in five innings and matched his career high with five walks, one of them intentiona­l. He has a 6.55 ERA after two games.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

Phillies 5, Mets 2 at New York: Odubel Herrera hit a two-run homer off Matt Harvey, and Philadelph­ia beat New York.

Jeremy Hellickson (1-0) held the Mets scoreless until Yoenis Cespedes chased him with a two-run homer in the sixth.

Harvey (0-2) gave up three runs and six hits in six innings.

Cubs 7, Diamondbac­ks 3 at Phoenix: Jake Arrieta homered and pitched seven innings, helping Chicago finish an impressive week by beating Arizona. The Cubs are tied with Cincinnati for the best record in the NL at 5-1.

Arrieta (2-0) allowed three runs and eight hits, striking out six. He hit a two-out, two-run homer in the second off Shelby Miller (0-1).

Reds 2, Pirates 1 at Cincinnati: Jay Bruce hit an RBI triple in the ninth and Cincinnati capped a strong season-opening homestand, beating Pittsburgh.

Former Pirates righthande­r Ross Ohlendorf (2-0) escaped a first-and-second, one-out jam in the ninth to get the win.

Eugenio Suarez opened the Reds’ sixth with his fourth homer of the season.

Nationals 4, Marlins 2 at Washington: Jayson Werth had an RBI single for his first hit of the season and Joe Ross allowed a run in seven innings to help Washington beat Miami.

Bryce Harper hit the 99th and 100th doubles of his career and drove in the Nationals’ first run.

Jonathan Papelbon gave up a ninth-inning homer to Miami’s Christian Yelich, but earned his third save.

Giants 9, Dodgers 6 at San Francisco: Joe Panik hit a tiebreakin­g two-run double in the sixth inning and San Francisco homered three times to overcome an early five-run deficit and beat Los Angeles.

Buster Posey, Brandon Belt and Angel Pagan all homered for the Giants.

Johnny Cueto (2-0) earned the win, allowing six runs and 10 hits in seven innings. Santiago Casilla got three outs for his second save.

Rockies 6, Padres 3 at Denver: Rookie Trevor Story capped his amazing first week in the majors by hitting his seventh home run, one of five solo shots by the Rockies. Carlos Gonzalez went deep twice and Nolan Arenado and Ryan Raburn also connected for Colorado.

AMERICAN LEAGUE

Orioles 5, Rays 3 at Baltimore: Manny Machado went 4 for 4 with a tworun homer, and Baltimore beat Tampa Bay to remain the only undefeated team in the majors. The 5-0 start matches the 1970 team for the best in Orioles history.

Vance Worley gave up three runs over 4¦ innings in his Orioles debut.

South Korean outfielder Hyun Soo Kim made his major league debut for Baltimore, starting in left field. He got two infield hits and went 2 for 3.

Blue Jays 3, Red Sox 0 at Toronto: Marco Estrada pitched seven shutout innings, Josh Donaldson hit a solo home run and Toronto beat Boston, avoiding a three-game sweep.

Activated off the 15-day disabled list, Estrada (1-0) gave up five hits, walked two and struck out eight

Royals 4, Twins 3 (10) at Kansas City, Mo.: Pinch runner Terrance Gore streaked home on a wild pitch with two outs in the 10th inning, scoring with a headfirst slide to lift Kansas City over winless Minnesota. The World Series champion Royals rallied for two runs in the ninth to tie, then dropped the Twins to 0-6.

Angels 3, Rangers 1 at Anaheim, Calif.: Jered Weaver pitched six innings in his season debut, and Los Angeles beat Texas to earn a split of the four-game series.

Mike Trout got his first two RBIs of the season and Albert Pujols singled home a run for Los Angeles.

Weaver (1-0) allowed a run and six hits en route to his 139th career win, passing Nolan Ryan for second on the franchise list behind Chuck Finley’s 165.

Athletics 2, Mariners 1 (10) at Seattle: Coco Crisp hit a two-out homer in the 10th inning to help Oakland overcome a dominant outing from Seattle ace Felix Hernandez, who struck out 10 over seven scoreless innings, allowing three hits and two walks.

Oakland’s Marcus Semien hit a homer to lead off the eighth against Joel Peralta.

INTERLEAGU­E

Brewers 3, Astros 2 at Milwaukee: Jimmy Nelson struck out nine in six-plus innings, and Milwaukee took advantage of early wildness by Houston ace Dallas Keuchel in a win.

Keuchel (1-1) walked four in the first inning and gave up a two-run single to Aaron Hill. He left with two outs in the sixth with a career-high-tying six walks, including an intentiona­l pass to Ryan Braun.

Domingo Santana added an RBI double in the fourth for Milwaukee.

DEVELOPMEN­TS

Briefly: The Chicago White Sox’s game against the Cleveland Indians was postponed and will be made up May 23 as part of a doublehead­er . ... The Detroit Tigers’ game against the New York Yankees was postponed. A makeup date was not announced.
