25 years ago: 1991

Betsy Patrick was among about 250 who came out on a rainy Thursday night to attend a meeting of United Leaders Against Crime. Mrs. Patrick said her husband would have come, too, but he couldn’t. He was one of the 207 people slain in Memphis in 1990, a record. The homicides this year are keeping pace. At the City Hall meeting, attendees saw something encouragin­g: the emergence of a communityw­ide effort to fight violent crime in Memphis. Groups representi­ng all segments of the community appointed four committees to coordinate the battle. Mayor Dick Hackett and police Director J.E. Ivy and other speakers challenged the crowd to join the battle.

50 years ago: 1966

A public vote on a proposal to replace the five-man City Commission with a mayor and 13 councilmen will be sought in November instead of August, Program of Progress directors voted yesterday. The November election was sought by Dr. James Wax, rabbi of Temple Israel, a Progress director. “We are making a historic decision which it would be foolish to rush. Our present government is obsolete, but we have waited 50 years to change it. I don’t think another three months will make that much difference.” The additional time will be used in a public education campaign.

In the opening encounter in the 1941 Dixie League baseball season at Bellevue Park this afternoon, the Cronies will take on the Chums in the first game, with the Buddies performing against the Pals in the nightcap.

The death early Monday morning of Sister Mary Edeltrudis, head nurse for nearly four years in the operating room at St. Joseph Hospital, has saddened the hearts of the physicians who make up the hospital’s staff and who operate there.

125 years ago: 1891

The Parisian Folly company’s engagement at the New Memphis theater closed last night. It was not a success.
