The Commercial Appeal

Buyers find treasures at junkers market

- By Emily Adams Keplinger

It was a different kind of “rodeo” that took place at the Agricenter International, April 8-9 as Ruth Barnes took her Southern Junkers Vintage Market to a new indoor location.

The juried market hosted vendors showcasing and selling their vintage and antique collectibles, art, jewelry and accessories.

“For those who appreciate repurposed and vintage items, it was definitely a junkers roundup,” said Barnes. “We had 65 vendors from 10 different states, all under one roof for a two-day show.”

Playing to the rodeo theme, Barnes jokingly advised customers to “wear their boots and bring their ropes, so they could lasso awesome vintage finds.”

The Southern Junkers Market showcased a wide range of items, with every booth staged for vintage appeal. Old suitcases served as display pieces for restyled jewelry, books and Carnival Glass dishware. The big difference between this market and most others is the majority of items for sale had been repurposed from their original life.

Local vendors included Jana Wilson, owner of Yesterday’s News, filled her booth with mixed media items that featured printed illustrations from vintage magazines and newspapers. Oakland resident Patti Yancey, of Kindred Spirit Style, was on hand with her handcrafted fabric purses and accessories, showcasing several new styles. Southaven residents Adrienne Andrew, of Abandoned Treasures, presented her vintage farmhouse items, while Mike and Nancy Clark, owners of ReNewed Intent, were set up with their one-ofa-kind journals featuring recycled book covers and their assemblages that combine found objects and repurposed items. Mindy Woodall, owner of Southern Vintage Co. in Bartlett, set up her booth with dumpster discards that had been repurposed.
