Macon Hall Elementary School is the 2016, elementary division, Kids Kan champion. The Cordovaarea school with a student population of 1,600 in grades K-5 collected nearly 18,000 items during its participation in the annual food/funds donation drive for Mid-South Food Bank.

Bellevue Middle School, near Downtown, once again was the middle school Kids Kan champion.

Food collected from the 115 competing public elementary and middle schools in both Shelby County and, for the first time, DeSoto County, will help food insecure households across the region.

Collectively, Kids Kan is expected to yield more than 250,000 pounds of food. Over the past 29 years, Kids Kan has accounted for over 8 million meals and annually serves as one of the Food Bank’s most successful donation drives.

“Kids Kan is an important part of our school year,” said longtime Macon Hall principal Mary Ann Spencer, noting its 19 years competing. “As a school we place an emphasis on building character, and part of that is teaching children early that they need to be givers, to make it part of their identity.”

Second-grader McKinley Bosiljevac provided over 4,000 food items, with the help of her grandfather, Van Krastan.

Her peer, Nya Goble, a fifth-grader, said she not only enjoyed personally contributing to Kids Kan, but was “happy to see all the grades give collectively to such a good cause.”

Mid-South Food Bank community relations manager David Stephens was not surprised that Macon Hall earned the most points in the food donation

contest.

“Macon Hall has always been a strong contributor, and in year’s past has averaged collecting in the 12,000 item range. So they have always been near the top. But it’s the passion at Macon Hall that has always been there toward helping with Kids Kan. The school is very spirited about it.”

As Kids Kan champion, Macon Hall will receive a trophy and be honored by district administrations in a future board meeting. The school and top-donating classes also will receive rewards.
