Honor a vet: Enter treats in baking contest
Proceeds from sales go to veterans home
Put on your apron, get out grandma’s cookbook and bake a dessert while honoring a veteran with sweets during the 10th annual Cake & Pie Baking Contest, hosted by the Town of Arlington Senior Citizens Center on April 30, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
It’s all part of the Arlington in April celebration held on the beautiful Arlington Town Square when vendors from all over will showcase their wares, along with plenty of exciting activities, entertainment and great food. Arlington in April will be 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The baking contest is for amateur bakers of all ages. Not only do you have the chance to win prizes, but your homemade recipe will be part of a Bake Sale for veterans. Proceeds from this year’s baking contest are being donated to the West Tennessee Veterans Home. The WTVH is currently raising funds to build a skilled nursing facility for veterans in Arlington.
“This year we want the proceeds to help the WTVH raise funds for the much-needed facility that will take care of our veterans,” said Betty Russell, director of Arlington Senior Citizens Center. “We have lots of veterans throughout the mid-south and they need and deserve the care this future facility will offer.”
First, second and third place prizes will be awarded for presentation. The theme is Most Patriotic.
Participants will drop off dessert entries April 29 at the ASCC, between 2-5:30 p.m. All refrigerated desserts should be dropped off between 5-5:30 p.m.
Winners will be posted at 10 a.m. at ASCC during the Arlington in April celebration. Desserts will be sold for $1 per slice. Fresh tea and hot coffee also will be available for $1.
Entry forms with official rules are available at the Arlington Senior Citizens Center located 6265 Chester St. Entry forms are due by April 18 and can be dropped off at the ASCC.
