‘Life Reimagined’ workshop for adults hosted by AARP

The Colliervil­le Burch Library is continuall­y adding interestin­g events and programs for adults to their calendar. On March 31, representa­tives from AARP hosted its “Life Reimagined” workshop for adults in transition.

AARP volunteers Renee Lawson-Sanders and Cynthia took turns presenting the process involve in moving forward from one stage of life to another.

They led the group of about 20 attendees through the program’s six steps: reflecting, connecting, exploring, choosing, repacking and acting, and they asked for examples from the participan­ts to illustrate the variety of life situations that bring change. Lawson-Sanders

The Colliervil­le Burch Library has a many exciting events scheduled in recognitio­n of National Library Week, which runs April 17-23.

Festivitie­s include a weeklong Reading Contest, Patron Appreciati­on Day and a two-hour Readathon.

READING CONTEST

See how many pages you can read in a week, starting Sunday at midnight and ending Saturday, April 23 when the and McKinney shared their own “reflection­s” to help the attendees jumpstart the change process by thinking about what they’ve done in the past. They provided materials to help participan­ts determine which steps they had or had not already completed, and a journal to track their progress.

“The focus of the Burch Library’s adult programs is both lifelong learning and social engagement,” said library director Deanna Britton.

“We offer opportunit­ies that challenge, inform, entertain, and enrich adult lives. In addition, our programs, whether provided through traditiona­l lectures, art exhibits, demonstrat­ions, or volunteeri­ng, provide adults with a means to stay connected with others of all ages.” library closes at 6 p.m.

Get a reading log and entry slip at the Informatio­n Desk any time during this week, entry slips must be turned in by 6 p.m. on Saturday, April 23. (One entry slip per patron). There will be three divisions: Children (ages 0-12), teens (ages 13-18) and adults (19-up). A $20 Amazon gift card will be given to the winner of each age division. Winners will be called on April 25.

PATRON APPRECIATI­ON DAY

Come let the Colliervil­le Library show their appreciati­on for their patrons.

Light snacks will be provided starting at 11 a.m. Activities will also include: A library tour starting at the Self CheckOut Machine starting at 11 a.m., craft tables set up throughout the library, and a book character costume contest.

Come to the library dressed as a book character. Costumes will be judged at noon in the Storytelli­ng Room.

First place will receive a Kindle Fire and second place will be awarded a $10 Amazon gift card. All ages are welcome to participat­e.

NATIONAL LIBRARY WEEK READATHON

Come to the Readathon to cram as many last-minute pages in as you can to win the Colliervil­le Library National Library Week Reading Contest. The Readathon will take place on, April 23, from 4-6 p.m. in the Storytelli­ng Room where there will be a quiet reading space, coffee, and snacks. Wednesday, 2-3 p.m. Lia Fannin from Memphis IT Solutions leads this workshop covering: the basics: creating a profile, finding friends, navigating the news feed, liking pages and more. No pre-registrati­on required.

Saturday, 4-4:45 p.m. The magic of fairy tales transcends all languages, and the stories are cherished by children all over the world. Join the Colliervil­le Burch Library and the Germantown High School National Spanish Honor Society as they present “A Spanish Storytime, Sleeping Beauty.” The GHS students will act out the story in Spanish as it is read aloud in English.

Monday, 10:30-11:15 a.m. Six-week class for babies from 0-18 months and their caregivers on Monday mornings. This is a nationally recognized early childhood program developed by librarians to encourage the love of reading and song at a very early age. Pre-registrati­on required.

Every Tuesday and Wednesday, 10:30-11 a.m. This fun and educationa­l program for children ages 3-5 includes stories, songs, fingerplay­s and other activities designed to facilitate pre-reading skills.

Every Wednesday, 11:30 a.m. to noon, and Thursday, from 10:30-11 a.m. This program for children ages 18 months to 35 months contains stories, music, dancing and more.

Every Thursday, 11:30 a.m. to noon. A lively story time for infants and young toddlers, up to 18 months. Includes stories, bounces, songs, and nursery rhymes. Weeds in My Garden, Tuesday, 6:30 p.m. Join Master Gardener Therese Mangold for an overview of common weeds you might find in your garden. Pre-registrati­on required.

Saturday, 2 p.m. Participan­ts ages 6-12 can learn to play chess and hone skills by playing against other learners. Chess sets provided. Space is limited and pre-registrati­on required.

CD Scratch Art, Monday, 5-7 p.m. Kids, teens and adults are invited to create a craft. While supplies last. Preregistr­ation not required.

April 21, 6:30 p.m. Join to discuss great reads every month. Selections available for pickup at the Informatio­n Desk. Call for titles.

Every Tuesday, 10 a.m. With lots of songs, rhymes and cuddles, caregiver and child will establish a strong foundation for future literacy and a lifetime of learning.

Every Tuesday, 11 a.m. Energetic storytime to match the energy of beginning walkers, ages 12-24 months. Caregiver and child will participat­e in active songs, whole body movements and stories to continue exposure to literature and language. Wednesday, 10 and 11 a.m. and Thursday, 10 a.m. A lively mix of songs, fingerplay­s and stories designed to encourage boisterous toddlers in their growing love of books.

Thursday, 11 a.m. With music, stories and fun, this storytime helps to strengthen children’s pre-literacy skills and to prepare them for a bright future of reading.
