Rape may be tied to similar assaults in apartments

A woman was sexually assaulted in an apartment complex early Sunday morning, and police said it may be connected to similar assaults at other complexes dating back to 2014.

The latest incident happened about 4 a.m. Sunday at the Madison at Cypress Lake Apartments at 6860 Quince in the Hickory Hill area.

According to police, a man broke into the woman’s apartment, then raped her. He was armed with a handgun, police said. The suspect was described as a black man in his 20s with a thin build. He was wearing white shoes, jeans and a white shirt.

Police said this assault has similarities to at least five more sexual assaults, all at apartment complexes.

Three of those are in the Cordova area: Country Squire, Woodchase and Lincoln at Wolfchase.

Two others, including the latest incident, happened in the Hickory Hill area, including a January assault at the Arbors of Hickory Ridge.

Other assaults have occurred at the Summit apartments near Raleigh and Edgewater in Northeast Memphis, not far from Shelby Farms.
