Police shoot man at airport in Dallas

Suspect was attacking woman

- Washington Post

A Dallas police officer shot and injured a man seen attacking a woman outside an airport in Dallas, authorities said Friday afternoon.

Randall Blankenbaker, an assistant Dallas police chief, said the shooting took place at about noon Friday outside the baggage claim at Dallas Love Field.

Police believe the situation involved “a domestic disturbance between a lady and her children’s father,” Blankenbaker said. Authorities believe the unidentified man was using rocks “to attack the lady,” and during this encounter an officer assigned to the airport “came to the aid of the lady and he was rushed by the gentleman with the rock,” Blankenbaker said.

The officer, who has also not been identified, fired “a number of times” after the man with the rock tried to rush him a second time, said Blankenbaker, who oversees the unit that investigates police-involved shootings.

In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, the man’s condition was not immediately known, though officials said he was conscious when he was taken to a local hospital.

In a video posted on Instagram, multiple shots could be heard outside the airport as law enforcement officers are seen confronting someone outside an entrance to the facility.

After the gunshots, a number of people ran through the security area without being checked, so airport officials had everyone go back out to go through security again, Blankenbaker said.

Dallas Love Field is about 18 miles away from the much larger Dallas/ Fort Worth International Airport. It is served by five airlines and sees far fewer passengers than Dallas/ Fort Worth.
