No charges in city’s 100th homicide

- Jody Callahan

No charges will be filed in the shooting death of Dashun Dye, a 19-year-old man who became the city’s 100th homicide victim of the year Saturday.

According to police, this incident began around 1:10 p.m. at the Family Dollar at 831 Thomas St. Responding officers found that a Coca-Cola truck driver was inside the store stocking products when he heard that two men were stealing drinks from his truck, police said.

The driver ran outside and saw Dye and another man putting drinks in the trunk of a silver car, police said. The other suspect ran away, police said, but Dye remained on the scene until he heard that police were coming. He ran, but the truck driver managed to prevent him from fleeing in the car, police said.

Soon after, police said, an aggressive Dye returned and allegedly made threats to the driver. The driver pulled a gun and shot Dye; he was pronounced dead on the scene.

The Shelby County District Attorney’s office declined to file charges; the driver has been released from custody.
