Police open fire, arrest three suspects

- Yolanda Jones

Three suspects were in custody after an incident Monday morning that saw police open fire on one of them outside the Goodwill Village apartments, officials said.

Police were still trying to sort out exactly what happened Monday, but the incident began around 3:40 a.m. in the 2500 block of Goodwill Lane in North Memphis.

Officers arrived on the scene after receiving information about an armed party at the complex. Officers approached a vehicle and ran the tag information, discovering it was stolen.

Police saw three people inside the vehicle who appeared to be armed, police spokesman Louis Brownlee said.

Two of the suspects were detained. Although police initially said the third suspect ran while firing shots at officers, they later clarified that it didn’t appear that any of the suspects opened fire.

However, police did fire on the suspect; they also sent in the K-9 unit.

The third suspect was caught by the police dog and was taken to the Regional Medical Center in noncritical condition. It was unclear whether he had been hit by gunfire.

The officers who were involved will be relieved of duty pending the outcome of the investigation, Interim Memphis Police Director Michael Rallings said during a brief news conference Monday morning.
