Briarcrest hires new lacrosse coach
Helped lead to Va. Tech to SELC titles
Briarcrest Christian School has named Dr. Matt Schroeder as the new varsity boys lacrosse coach. As well as his coaching duties, Schroeder will also be teaching Bible at Briarcrest.
Schroeder is from Phoenix, Maryland where he attended Loyola Blakefield High School. Upon graduation in 2006, Schroeder attended Muhlenberg College where he was a four-year lacrosse starter. His senior year he was named Honorable Mention All-Centennial Conference and was named the Arthur Taylor award winner for outstanding contribution and leadership by the coaching staff. He was also a two-year captain of the team in 2009 and 2010.
Upon graduation in 2010, Schroeder attended Virginia Tech to pursue his graduate degrees in food science and technology. In 2012, he received his master’s degree in food science with a specialty in microbiology and immediately transitioned to his PhD., which he completed in December 2015 at Virginia Tech.
While at Virginia Tech, Schroeder was involved with the lacrosse team as the assistant coach from 2010-2013. In 2013, he was named head coach of the Hokies for the 2014-2015 seasons where the Hokies went 33-5, winning SELC championships both years. During the 2015 season, the Hokies went to the MCLA national semifinals, the fur-
thest a Virginia Tech team had ever advanced. Schroeder was named SELC Coach of the Year in 2015 as well as MCLA National Coach of the Year.
Working closely with the defense, Matt has coached 10 MCLA All Americans, including a First Team All-American and SELC defensive player of the year in 2012.
“To say that I am excited about Coach Schroeder joining us as our head lacrosse coach is an understatement,” said high school athletic director Joe Rowell. “Briarcrest is very fortunate to have someone that has achieved the coaching success that he has become our new head coach and be on campus in a teaching position.
