Liberty defensive back commits to Tigers

a three-star defensive back from Jackson, Tennessee, posted on Twitter Sunday afternoon that he has committed to the University of Memphis football program.

Long reportedly had offers from a handful of Southeaste­rn Conference schools, including Kentucky, Mississipp­i State and Texas A&M. He is the second player from Liberty Technology Magnet High to commit to the Tigers over the past few months, alongside defensive end

Both players are rated three-star recruits by 247 Sports and Rivals, and unrated by ESPN.

Listed at 5 feet 11 and 205 pounds, Long recorded 41 tackles, five intercepti­ons and a forced fumble for Liberty last year. He also amassed nearly 1,000 return yards between punts, kickoff and intercepti­on returns.

of Nashville announced his commitment Friday. Long is also the 23rd prospect to publicly commit to Memphis’ 2017 recruiting class, with National Signing Day approximat­ely five months away.

The Redbirds defeated the Round Rock Express (Triple-A Rangers) 8-0 Sunday after the game was called in the sixth inning due to unplayable field conditions following a rainstorm.

Deck McGuire got his seventh win of the season, pitching five scoreless innings and allowing two hits while striking out four.

The Redbirds’ newest player, Chris Rivera, hit a two-run homer in his second-career Triple-A at-bat to give the Redbirds a 4-0 lead in the fourth inning.

The Redbirds as a team were 13-for-28 (.464) at the plate and were 7-for11 with runners in scoring position. Eight of the nine players in the Redbirds lineup got at least one hit.

The Redbirds scored in the eighth and ninth innings but couldn’t complete the comeback, losing to the Express 4-2. Round Rock took a 3-0 lead in the first inning and added a run in the seventh.

An RBI double by Jose Martinez in the eighth and David Washington’s home run in the ninth accounted for the Redbirds’ runs.

The St. Louis Cardinals activated switch-hitting catcher Brayan Pena from the 60day disabled list on Sunday and promoted catcher Carson Kelly from the Redbirds. St. Louis designated Memphis infielder Dean Anna for assignment to make room for Kelly and transferre­d pitcher Seth Maness (right elbow) from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list.
